The Estate

OUR VINEYARDS AND WINERY

The Castelo Branco family have made an effort to change their traditional cereal based agricultural activity to a more competitive agricultural activity such as vineyards and olive groves.
Planting began in 1995, after choosing areas with the right soil, exposure to the sun and vine variety. Our 200 hectares of vineyards, south-facing and set on sand-rich schist loam, are divided into gently-sloping areas. We used red wine grape varieties such as Aragonez, Trincadeira, Castelão, Touriga Nacional, Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Alicante Bouschet.
Our white varieties are Antão Vaz, Arinto, Verdelho and Viogner. The whole area is drip-watered, enabling perfect balance in the maturing of the grapes during the long, hot, dry summers.
Harvesting is done at night so that the grapes are harvested in the best conditions, at considerably lower temperatures than in the daytime, where they can reach 35º to 40º C. The harvest is almost exclusively mechanical, allowing the grapes to be quickly harvested at the optimum point indicated by maturation control analysis.
Our modern winery, with a capacity for 1.410.000 litres, combines traditional methods with advanced technology, enhancing perfect winemaking which brings out the excellent quality of our grapes. It was built in 2002, and is perfectly integrated into the architecture of Monte Paço do Conde, headquarters of the Herdade.

OLIVE GROVES AND PRODUCTION

Our love for olive oil has meant that Herdade Paço do Conde has produced nothing but the finest extra virgin olive oil over the years. Produced from the best varieties of olives, which are picked at the start of maturation, Paço do Conde Olive oil is known for its superior quality, transmitting the harmony around us through its flavour and aroma.
In 1998 we began planting the 1700 hectares of Paco do Conde olive groves, all drip-watered. Our olive varieties are Galega, Cobrancosa, Azeiteira, Frantoio, Arquebina and Picual, all chosen to reflect our ongoing search for the very highest quality. The relatively low productivity of some of these varieties is offset by the extraordinary quality of the olives.
The production of Herdade Paço do Conde´s olive oils is made since 2007 in OUR own facilities. Equipped with the most advanced technology, it has the capacity to process 650ton/day of olives and store up to two millions kg´s. The extra virgin olive oil production uses only mechanical cold processing, so as not to alter the natural characteristics of the juice extracted from the olives.
